  10. Nirvana (5:07)

Produced and mixed by Hugh Jones except "Love is a Wonderful Colour" produced by David Lord. Mixed by Hugh Jones. All titles composed by Ian McNabb.

Note the title differences of tracks 3 and 7 of the Canadian release. All three releases have different sleeves. The US sleeve has a picture of the band on the front. The Canadian sleeve is white with a small detail picture of the UK cover, see BEG 108T 12". The backs of the sleeves are also slightly different from one version to the next. The Canadian cover lists the tracks in the incorrect order. The track listing here is how they actually fall.

Track listing differences: The UK version has "Reaping the Rich Harvest" in place of the US and European versions' "Waterline." The Canadian version has both of these tracks, but is missing "As The Dragonfly Flies." The version of "Waterline" that appears on the Canadian version is not the same as the US version, but is the one that appears on the B-side of UK "Love is a Wonderful Colour". Production of this track on the Canadian album is incorrectly credited to Hugh Jones.

Entered the UK album chart on 31st March 1984. During a chart stay of 6 weeks, it peaked at number 24.

Entered the US charts on 21 April 1984. During a chart stay of 18 weeks, it peaked at number 40 for two weeks.

  1. Hollow Horse (remix) [4:56]
  2. Hollow Horse [4:00]
  3. The Atheist [4:25]

"Hollow Horse" produced by Hugh Jones. "The Atheist" produced by Martin Lawrence and The Icicle Works. "Nirvana" is a live track culled from the King Biscuit Flower Hour Show, and produced by the Icicle Works with thanks to Karen Kirsch. Initial releases of the 7" had a poster sleeve.

On the 12" version with "Nirvana (Live)", the parentheses indicate the time listed on the European Virgin version label; the brackets indicate the time as timed by watch on the UK version. Since there was considerable discrepancy, I have listed both times. To make things even more complicated, it appears that at least some versions of the 12", BEG119T have BEG119TP in the inner groove etching, and have the times on the label as indicated by the last timings shown. Carl

The German/European version of the 12" reports that "Hollow Horse" is the long version on the sleeve, but not on the label. It is 4:20.

Produced by Ian Broudie except "Everybody Loves To Play The Fool" produced by The Icicle Works and Pete Coleman and "I Never Saw My Home Town 'Til I Went Around The World" and "Into The Mystic" produced by The Icicle Works and Geoff Muir. All titles written by Ian McNabb except "Into The Mystic" written by Van Morrison.

Canadian LP and MC included an 8 song bonus album (LP cat no. SAMP 2) featuring 2 tracks by The Icicle Works: "Evangeline" and "Sweet Thursday." Both were identical to the album versions on "If You Want To Defeat Your Enemy..." This free LP was also given away with copies of The Go-Betweens' "Tallulah," Pierce Turner's "It's Only A Long Way Across," and Passion Fodder's "Fat Tuesday."

Although it may be difficult to see in the thumbnail scans, the US LP cover seems to be slightly different from the UK version. Notice that the US version has "The Icicle Works" above the album name as well. Color differences are probably differences in the scans or inks rather than intentional, although it does seem to me that the US version does obscure Ian's and Layhe's faces more.

German/European LP has same tracks as UK version, but note how there is considerable time differences listed on the labels. For example, "Walking With A Mountain." The numbers seem to be similar to what is listed on the U.S. and Canadian versions.

Entered the UK album chart on 21st March 1987. Remained on the chart for 4 weeks and peaked at number 28. BBL 78 CD is the re-release CD.

  12. Tin Can (3:18)

All titles composed by Ian McNabb except 2 McNabb/Layhe. Produced by Ian McNabb and mixed by Mark Wallis except "The Kiss Off" produced by Geoff Muir and The Icicle Works.

Note: The U.S. tracks are significantly different from the U.K. version, giving the album quite a different sound. "Shit Creek" is missing second part of the song on the US release. In addition, the U.S. CD version of "High Time", is about ten seconds shorter than the U.K. version due to an early fade-out. All other tracks (when they appear on the albums) seem to be the same on both sides of the Atlantic. The US versions of the album should probably credit production of "Hot Profit Gospel" and "Tin Can" to The Icicle Works and "Sure Thing" to Geoff Muir and The Icicle Works with all other tracks as credited on the UK/Canada releases. However, it reads: "Produced by 'Boots,' except 'The Kiss Off' produced by Geoff Muir and The Icicle Works."

A gold CD version exists. Catalog number same as UK version, Beggars Banquet IWA 2CD, UPC code 5 012093 009322. Made in UK. Mastered by Nimbus. Features "American" fish cover with UK track listing.

Entered the UK charts on 14 May 1988. During a three-week chart stay, the album peaked at 40.
